Last year the Croatian Designers Society for the first time ever organized the “Xmas Tree with Us” competition, which we covered here. They set out to find a fun, witty and intelligent “designer alternative” to the traditional and conventional Christmas tree as well as to exhibit the selected suggestions in the CDS’ Gallery during the course of December.
98 works arrived for this year’s competition within the set deadline. Due to the extremely large number of works, the Panel of Judges had to unexpectedly extend their selection process which was finalized on November 29th. The Panel of Judges consisted of Ira Payer (CDS), Nikola Radeljković (CDS), Koraljka Vlajo (CDS), Ivana Borovnjak CDS) and Siniša Cerovski (Cerovski Print Boutique), while Mirna Despot (Igepa), who was justifiably absent.
The panel of judges awarded the following works:
1st award 8.000 kn
Work title: Xmas xpress
Authors: Vesna, Nenad i Damir Prizmić
XMAS XPRESS is a compressed instant Xmas tree adapted for snail mailing. Receiving mail is a surprise per se nowadays – especially when the unexpected piece of mail holds additional surprises.
The solution is based on geometric structures stemming from a scientific work dealing with spiral structure reproduction and forms as seen in live organisms. A play on the air-mail envelope design, the Xmas-themed mix of colors without a figuration successfully interprets a Xmas tree with all its trimmings.
XMAS XPRESS is considerate and economical in its use of material and technique, unbreakable in transport, reusable and impatient to surprise the receiver with its hidden volume and irresistible charm.
2nd award 5.000 kn
Work title: The Stories for Little Children
Authors: Narcisa Vukojević & Igor Poturić
Headline The Stories for Little Children is shared by three originally written stories which are way beyond conventional Christmas stories genre thanks to its genuine style and design treatment. In a truly contemporary way stories narrate about this specific holiday and the values it refers to.
3rd award 3.000 kn
Work title: Žiglica
Authors: Tatjana Petric, Ivana Čukelj and Emilija Šimić
Žiglica is a mark in the form of needles. Needles as the smallest part of pine and its main structural element is converted into a tool for creative creation. Needles that do not butt, do not fall off and do not create a mess. Needles, which support the growth of trees, juniper, spruce, pine and other trees. Needles, which are not a ready-made product. Needles, which do not take up lots of space in the household except in the case of high creativity.
The panel of judges awarded the following works:
Work title: Zvjezdan Borić
Authors: Dejan Rogan and Natalija Nikpalj Polondak
Instead of creating an item whose glow will disappear after a few weeks in a drawer, closet or basement, the idea was to create an item that will glow all year round. Thanks to a simple transformation through changing the light bulb from the occasional green to plain white, or to another, depending on the situation and personal wishes, this Christmas tree lights up all year.
Work title: Bjornbor
Authors: Ivor Tomljanović, Bojana Bota
BJØRNBOR, the house moose, is a multifunctional alternative to the classic christmas tree. You can decorate it with various christmas ornaments, christmas lights or personalise it however you like!
It travels to your home in a practic briefcase and the setup will cost you only five minutes of your precious pre-festive time. Forget sawdust, cleaning up needles that have fallen of your tree and half-legal waste disposal at nighttime – BJØRNBOR is a clean, eco-friendly decoration that can grace your home for years.
Work title: Blagi dani
Authors: Nenad Jalšovec
A Book of Thematically Adapted Functional Absentee Notes
Work title: Mutty Christmas
Author: Sanja Kuzmanović
MUTTY CHRISTMAS / protection from Christmas audio disturbances Object for ignoring the annoying Christmas songs that we have to listen to every year, forcing the consumerism which is imposed upon us through all kinds of media and has nothing to do with the significance of Christmas. Christmas tree as the most recognizable symbol of Christmas is ironically replaced in the form of ear plugs. Song titles are designed in the spirit of Christmas using kitch Christmas fonts.
Christmas tree against Christmas carols!
