What do you do with the carton tubes after using up all the toilet paper? You most probably just throw them away without another thought, let alone thinking of them as potential art material. Anastasia Elias, a 33-year-old Paris-based artist uses precisely this carton as material to express her creativity. In using the completely drab piece of carton, Anastasia proves that a real artist doesn’t need expensive materials to create a great work of art. As a versatile artist she’s already held several independent exhibitions, using various materials and techniques, while also working as an illustrator for children’s books… however, she attracted great media attention with her carton miniature. The author’s work process as described in her own words: “I cut the small paper shapes that I stick inside the toilet paper rolls. I use tweezers to manipulate the paper shapes. I select the paper of the same color as the roll. It gives the illusion that the paper figures make part of the roll. I need few hours to make one piece.” Patience and precision are necessary for this type of art. As the amount of carton miniatures continued increasing, she decided to exhibit them in France’s capital. The exhibition entitled “Paper Cuts-Rolls” was fairly well-received by the critics, they praised it and characterized it as the fruit of Anastasia’s exceptional concentration, precision and patience.
Landscapes depicting animals and nature, flocks of birds, safari scenes, soccer players in action, boxers, along with various everyday situations are among the motifs.
Her miniatures being printed on T-shirts and on Macs and PC laptops is a special commendation to her project’s success.
