Despite there being a slight improvement in Zagreb’s high street fashion in the past few years, Zagreb is still fashion-wise barely on the map. However, the blog Croator.net offers a much better picture of Zagreb passers-by, inasmuch that at first glance one is sure to surmise that Antonija Butković, the young Zagreb-based fashionista from Rijeka, who started the blog, shot the photos on the streets of some other, fashion-wise more alternative and creative city. Not to say it’s a daily cakewalk for her, we’re still not that much of a creative environment, but she puts massive time and effort in her blog, while noting how in everyday passing through the city we might not pay much attention to people around us. “We’re a small community, but not easily dismissed. I hold that the biggest problem lies within our mentality. We should be more relaxed, not so focused on what others say, have more respect for ourselves and get rid of prejudices”, says Antonia.
Her blog was recently noticed by British VOGUE among numerous international competitors, when Vogue’s editorial board held a selection process of who will be writing up their new street-wear blog. Croator features shots of coincidental passers-by who catch Antonija’s lens with their style, as well as photo-reports from Croatian fashion events.
Antonija started to publish her blog last year after covering foreign fashion blogs and decided to put Croatia on the world’s street-style map, as she herself states. The blog is actually a mishmash of her favorite things: fashion – she graduated from the Faculty of Textile Technology in Zagreb – photography, strolling through the city and meeting new people. Considering that, upon launching Croator.net, and not wanting to limit herself to a Croatian-speaking audience, she thus writes in English, and her choice of blogs are the following: StockholmStreetStyle, Stil in Berlin, Face Hunter and The Sartorialist, which we featured here.
