  • Street Art Goes to Dugave

One of the projects whose uniqueness made an impact last year, and made the list of new and different cultural events in Croatia – MUU – Street Art Museum – is about to embark on a new art project.

The team that came up with the idea of transforming the appearance of the long wall in Branimirova Street by painting it in Spring 2010, encouraged by its subsequent success, has decided to cross the Sava River just before the end of Summer 2011, and once again, give the public an opportunity to witness firsthand the many talents street artists have to offer. And to think – all that in Dugave, a neighborhood in Novi Zagreb. The project has been presented by its director Ivana Vukšić accompanied by her associates and partners; the representatives of EUNIC – European Union National Institute for Culture in Croatia; as well as Adidas Sports Apparel and Dulux Paints. The presentation of the project has taken place at the press conference at Europa Cinema.

In honor of this new project by the MUU, Dugave has fittingly changed its name into Duugave. In the period between 1st – 15th September, about thirty Croatian, and a number of international artists, will be using the public areas in Dugave as their panting canvas. During this time, the authors will mostly be focused on the elementary school in Dugave, the main building of the Tratinčica Kindergarten, and a few underground parking areas in the neighborhood. Alongside the participation of international artists, which is a novelty; it should also be mentioned that, unlike with the Branimirova Street project where the entire “work” was focused on painting; this project is not exclusively painting-oriented. The guests from Serbia, the KIBORZ collective will, for instance, be showing a spectacular 3D video mapping with live music; and a Croatian artist Cho Cho will be making nylon doll sculptures of enviable size.

Other surprises and news regarding the MUUseum in Dugave, as well as the interviews with the participants in this art project, and also photos showing their creations while they are being made; will be available on the pogledaj.to website as it’s one of the Media partners of this event.

As far as Croatian street artists are concerned, Puma34, Oko, Ninja Tiger, Sretan  Bor, Lunar and many others will be participating. The international “camp” will include ESH from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Demo from Italy, Phlegm from Great Britain, and the French-Austrian duo Jana&JS

The MUU invites all those interested to visit the aforementioned locations in Dugave between 1st and 15th of September to witness the actual creation of the works. For the closing part of the event, on 15th of September, a big picnic on the meadow in front of the elementary school in Dugave will be held. The picnic will include a concert by Trešnjevači mališani, a renowned children’s vocal group from Zagreb; as well as a music set by the popular DJ Itch, and a 3D mapping on the facades of the surrounding buildings. Ivana Vukšić points out that 15th of September is also the date when the festive but casual opening of the biggest street museum in Croatia – the one without office-hours and with no expiration date – will be held.

According to the organizers, the aim of this project is to promote street art, achieve the decentralization of the “cultural content” in Zagreb, as well as the revival of the neglected parts of the city.

Organizers also say that, at the same time, this enables the participation in the creation of the street art trend in the region, Europe, and the world; that it helps the creation of the working platform for the local artists, and that it generates the opportunities for cooperation both nationally and internationally.

MUU in DUUGAVE is organized by the CENTRAL UNIT (“Centralna jedinica”) a non-profitable association founded in 2009, with the aim of promoting and developing culture and art, encouraging creativity, and building a platform for sharing knowledge and skills.

This project is developed with the support of the City of Zagreb, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Tourism, the City of Zagreb Tourist Board, EUNIC European Union National Institute for Culture in Croatia, the Open Society Institute, the Croatian Association of Artists, Adidas, Dulux Paints, Ginger Agency, Vojković & Daughters Visual Communications Studio, and Ana Labudović responsible for the visual identity of the project.

Media Partners for this event are Pogledaj.to, Večernji list, Net.hr, PlanB and Radio 808

More on the MUUseum can be found on the official museum website, their Facebook page, or their Twitter page.
