The Piran Days of Architecture is an international conference annually held from 1983 onwards in the Slovenian town of Piran. The goal of the conference is determining and valorizing current architectural trends and presentation of the most progressive and most innovative ideas in the field of architectural production. This internationally reputed manifestation focuses on the importance and influence of architecture within the current European cultural context.

In the framework of the Piran Days of Architecture an exhibition of the realizations of recently accomplished projects by Central European architects is held annually, and the best project, as voted by a panel of judges, is awarded the Piranesi Award, named after the 18th century artist and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi, whose family’s origins are traced back to Piran. In addition to awards for realized projects of more or less established architectural practices, a Piranesi Student’s Honorable Mention is awarded for competing projects in the student category including eight regional faculties.

The main 2010 Piranesi Award went to Slovenian architects Maruša Zorec and Matjaž Bolčina for the Maribor Naskov Castle Project. In addition to the Croatian students and their Algae Cultivation Project, Ljubljana student Ambrož Bartol was also awarded for his Bathing Resort on the River in Podpeč Project.

The nominations model for the annual award operates as follows: a selected commissioner within each country suggests five projects which proceed to compete for the Piranesi Award. Here’s a list of countries whose architects and projects were represented at the Piran Days of Architecture and competed for the Piranesi Award: Austria, Czech Republic, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Slovakia and Slovenia. Past Croatian winners of the Piranesi Award include njiric+ Architects, awarded for their Retkovac Kindergarten in 2007 and Randić Turato Arhitechts, awarded for their Krk Elementary School project in 2005.

This year’s Croatian candidates competing for the prize, excluding the Studio UP, were suggested by this year’s commissioner Branko Silađin. The nominees were Randić Turato Architects with their Veli Vrh Primary School, featured here, Nikola Bašić’s Monument to Kornati Firemen, the project for the Agency for Navigable Pathways in Vukovar by the Urban Techniques Studio, and the Bridge on the Railway Station in Osijek by Branimir Kljajić and Goran Jagić.

The students’ projects were nominated by selected professors from their faculties, thus the Zagreb Faculty of Architecture was represented by Janko Jelić with the SPORT+ Project whose mentor was Tonči Žarnić and Marko Liović with the Urban Elevator Vertical Square Project, created under the mentorship of Ivan Crnković, Miroslav Geng, Tin Sven Franić and Lovorka Prpić. The Split FCEA, in addition to the awarded “Algara” – Algae Cultivation Project, lead by Hrvoje Njirić’s mentorship, was represented by Ivan Begonja with the urboAGER Project in Drniš, created under Nikola Bašić’s mentorship.

The panel of judges presiding over the awards ceremony was comprised of the following members:  Till Schneider (schneider+schumacher), Saša Begović (3LHD), Klaas Goris (Coussée & Goris architecten), Jurij Kobe (ATELIERarhitekti), Quintus Miller (Miller & Maranta) Victor Mestre (vmsa arquitectos), Paul O. Robinson (University of Florida, School of Architecture) and the Chair of the panel of judges – Bijoy Jain (Studio Mumbai architects).
