Have you ever asked yourself how your favorite libation would look blown up a 1000 times and what the cocktail you’re currently drinking would look like on your living room wall? It probably didn’t cross your mind while sipping your aperitif or enjoying a glass of fine wine that you’re actually drinking a small work of art. Drink and photography enthusiasts from the American company BevShots came up with this highly unusual idea. They made photographs of almost all alcoholic, as well as non-alcoholic beverages they found on the market, but from a completely different angle. They turned cocktails, beer and juices into real abstract works of art. The images are made by first crystallizing the beverage of choice on a lab slide. Using a standard light microscope with a camera attached, the light source is polarized and passed through the crystal. This creates the amazing colors we see in our favorite drinks. Each image is created by using a dropper of each particular drink and squeezing a droplet onto a slide. Then the drops are allowed to dry out and the slide is placed under the microscope when the picture is taken. It can be printed out on any type of background and in any size.

You have the chance to look at your favorite drink from a different, somewhat less perilous, perspective. Trial photos were taken at the University of Florida by their creator Michael Davison, who back in 1992 invented microscopic photography, patented his idea and made it into a licensed product. Lester Hutt, the manager of the BevShots MicroArt company bought the license and made a shrewd business move and kept the party going by building a successful company which made its mark with this unique technique of enjoying various drinks and their photos.
